We are excited to have CJ Breen lead a special 6 week series at Water and Rock Studio:

Vinyasa Therapy

Class/Series Description:

Yoga is most often defined as “the stilling of the mind-stuff.” Obtaining this mastery of the mind involves finding a balance of effort/practice and non-attachment/ease.  With “too much” effort through excessive worry or overthinking, there might be anxiety, panic, or fear.  With “too much” non-attachment, there could be depression, apathy, or lethargy. These experiences of imbalance create and sustain negative thinking and critical self-talk.  Awareness and mindfulness can minimize the destructive impact of negative thinking.

Join me for a practice of challenging movement, focused breath, reflection on yogic philosophy, guided mediation and relaxation, balancing effort and non-attachment.  Expect to develop an awareness of your internal experience, and practice mindfulness to become an “observer’ of thoughts and feelings, rather than being attached to them.  All experience levels welcome.

Brief highlight of your experience and expertise as it relates to this 6 week series

C.J. first found yoga in 2011 while in graduate school, looking for a way to change up her usual workout routine. After noticing the physical and mental benefits of yoga, C.J. fell in love with the practice, and immersed herself in her local studio’s work-exchange program, which allowed her to practice daily. In December 2013 C.J. completed her 200 hour yoga teacher training at Dana Hot Yoga, and began teaching weekly vinyasa classes at the studio.

In addition to teaching yoga, C.J. works as a mental health counselor in Philadelphia.  She realized in her role as counselor, the importance of a holistic, integrative approach when addressing mental health needs.  Wanting to empower clients rather than treat symptoms, C.J. enrolled in the level I yoga therapy training in the hopes of gaining knowledge and skills to share with clients struggling with depression, anxiety and trauma.

C.J. completed the level I yoga therapy training with Dr. Bob Butera at the Yoga Life Institute in Devon, PA.  The Yoga Life training illustrated how yogic practice and theory can be incorporated in daily life to minimize stress, reframe negative thinking, and feel content in each present moment.  C.J. was eager to incorporate elements of yoga therapy into group classes and individual work with practitioners.  In both group classes and private yoga therapy session, C.J. aims to provide a practice that encourages practitioners to develop self-awareness, let go of the ego, and utilize focus on the breath to ground in the present moment.  Through consistent practice and dedication, the ability to be mindful and grounded on the mat, eventually translates to the ability to remain mindful and grounded when life stressors arise.
